Ken Russell's The Devils screens in Los Angeles
Ken Russell's The Devils is scheduled to screen Wednesday, August 26 at L.A.'s Egyptian Theatre.

The film is considered the granddaddy of nunsploitation having sparked a tidal wave of imitators that brought about a Golden Age of nunsploitation films in the 1970s. Highly controversial, The Devils is a must-see for any fan of the genre. If you live in the Los Angeles area, Nunsploitation.Net strongly encourages you to attend.

You can read our review and watch the Devils trailer to get a sneak peek at what lies ahead. Trust us. You don't want to miss this opportunity to see a classic nunsploitation film on the big screen.

Also playing is Lucio Fulci's Beatrice Cenci (1969).

Beyonce wants in on Sister Act

Beyonce

Beyonce was reportedly impressed by the stage version of Sister Act at the London Palladium and is now trying to persuade Disney into backing a new movie for her to star in. Yes, a movie based on the musical based on the movie.

Beyonce would play the role of sexy lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier who was originally portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg in the movies and is currently played by Patina Miller in the stage version. The U.K.'s Daily Mail even speculates that the role of the Mother Superior would go to Doubt's Meryl Streep!

While she awaits Disney's okay, Beyonce is mulling the idea of remaking the Sister Act hit "Take Me to Heaven".

With a sexy new star, could the new Sister Act take a more nunsploitation-friendly spin on the original? We can only hope!

Sexy nun ice cream ad too risqué for the U.K.

Antonio Federici Italiano Gelato ice cream ad

An ice cream ad featuring a nun and a priest about to kiss has been deemed too sexy for UK audiences. The Advertising Standards Authority banned the ad after receiving just 10 complaints.

The ad for Antonio Federici Italiano Gellato ice cream features a nun and a priest closing in for a kiss. In the sexiest version of the ad, the priest is bare-chested. According to Federici, "the ad was intended as a light-hearted, tongue in cheek portrayal celebrating forbidden Italian temptations."

You can view the ads in our full article.

Virgin Territory reviewed

Virgin Territory DVD

Also known in some countries as Decameron Pie, Virgin Territory is Dino De Laurentis' hip, new reimagining of Giovanni Boccaccio's Il Decameron. The new movie features a hot, young cast including Hayden Christensen (Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith) and Mischa Barton (The O.C.).

One of Boccacio's stories that makes in the movie is our favorite, "Massetto and the Nuns". Christensen's character pretends to be deaf and dumb so he can land a job as the convent gardner and bed all the nuns. It's hotter than you can imagine!

Check out our DVD review, download some pictures, and watch the trailer!

Will you answer 'The Calling'?

Jan Dunn's The Calling

Edinbugh International Film Festival is screening Jan Dunn's new film The Calling about a young woman who enters the convent, against the urgings of her friends and family.

Festival director Hannah McGill has highlighted The Calling star, Emily Beecham, as one of the festival's 'Trailblazers'.

Beecham recently described her role as the initiate Joanna to The Scotsman: "She receives pressure from her family, her best friend and her boyfriend, as none of them want her to leave, but she's very determined and knows that she wants to do it for all the right reasons — unlike some of the others. We discover all is not what it seems."

Sounds like a nunsploitation hallmark to us! The Calling screens June 21.

Abi Titmuss cast as a nun

Abi Titmuss topless breasts

In a case of delightfully tongue-in-cheek casting, Abi Titmuss has been cast as a nun, Sister Violet, in an upcoming episode of Hotel Babylon.

In its fourth season, Hotel Babylon is a popular British TV drama that showcases the sexy side of the high-class hotel business. Titmuss is slated to debut as Sister Violet in the first episode of the fourth season airing June 19.

Abi Titmuss was catapaulted into fame when a sex tape featuring her and celebrity boyfriend John Leslie was made public. The former nurse went on to glamor modeling and landed a job as a host for the British pornographic channel, Television X. Most recently, she appeared as a pole dancing instructor in the stage play "The Naked Truth".

Celebrity nun musings: Heather Graham &mdash a bad nun

Heather Graham in a sexy red dress

Heather Graham, whom you may know from her role as Felicity Shagwell in Austin Powers, told the Daily Mail that she often wonders what her life would have been like if she had become a nun.

"I've often wondered how that would have worked out," Graham told reporters. "I'd have made a terrible nun. I'm a good Catholic girl in the way that Madonna is. In the sense that I'm not that good at all."

You know Heather, if you ever want to try out being a bad nun, we have a few movie roles in mind for you....

Celebrity nun musings: Lady Gaga &mdash the nuns would be proud!

Lady Gaga nearly nude

Scantily clad songstress Lady Gaga insists that the nuns who instructed her at New York's Convent of the Sacred Heart Catholic school would be proud of her.

"I haven't had any feedback from the nuns. But it's interesting because I think everyone assumes that because I went to such a religious school perhaps they don't appreciate what I'm doing now. But it is quite the opposite," she told reporters. "I got a really solid education, in particular how to analyse art, how to make art. So if anything, my teachers are sort of nodding their heads and saying, 'She did a good job of using her artistic abilities to really create a new kind of pop.' "

We can't vouch for the nuns, Lady Gaga, but take assurance in this — we approve of your outfits! Especially that one you're wearing on the cover of Rolling Stone!

TCM scores White Sister

White Sister

Turner Classic Movies has enlisted the talents of Lawrence University student Garth Neustadter to compose a new score for the 1923 nunsploitation classic The White Sister.

Neustadter was originally tapped to compose a piano score, but he went the extra mile and created a score for a full orchestra. "I thought the film really needed taht dramatic effect and all the different colors that can be brought out by an orchestra," Neustadter told Fox News.

Look for The White Sister and it's new musical accompaniment on TCM's Silent Nights.

Sister Hermione

Nineteen-year-old actress Emma Watson, best known for playing Hermione Granger of Harry Potter fame, has recently posed for an artsy, sometimes sexy, photoshoot for French publication Crash.

Of primary interest to nunsploitation fans is the image (pictured left) in which she appears dressed as a ghostly faux nun, her face painted white and her hair bound in a wimple. Could there be a nunsploitation film in Watson's future? We can only hope!

Sexy nuns descend from the heavens
nun stillettos   No, it's not a dream, not a joke and not an imaginary story.

Traffic slowed to a halt in London as nuns in stockings and stillettos descended from the sky. A nunsploitation fan's dream come true, it was actually a publicity stunt promoting the London preview of the Sister Act musical.

These nuns weren't angels (not literally, at least), they were hired performers rappelling from the face of London's Palladium.

Arn: The Knight Templar, Sins of the Sisters reviewed

We've been on a reviewing crusade! We've got two new reviews of nunsploitation movies dealing with the crusades.

First up is our review of the multimillion dollar Swedish film Arn: The Knight Templar. While not exclusively a nunsploitation movie, it has more than its fair share of worthy scenes.

Next, we review the hentai anime Sins of the Sisters. An ambitious crusader is betrayed by the pope and sold into slavery. He vows revenge and is reincarnated as a transsexual Japanese school girl (we are not making this up!) Despite the strong sexual themes, the movie was surprisingly tame.

Pasolini's Decameron reviewed

We've got another review ready for your consumption! This time around, we visit Pier Paolo Pasolini's film adaptation of Giovanni Boccaccio's Il Decameron in his movie of the same name.

In Il Decameron, Pasolini adapts nine short stories to film, including our favorite, "Massetto and the Nuns". Pasolini's Decameron movie was so hugely successful, it spawned a host of imitators and, along with Ken Russell's The Devils, it helped fuel a Golden Age of nunsploitation films. Truly a landmark film of the genre, Decameron is certainly worthy of our review.

Doubt hits the shelves April 7
Nominated for 5 Academy Awards, John Patrick Shanley's Doubt is probably the most successful, most acclaimed nunsploitation film since The Devils.

Sadly, it doesn't exactly fit in the genre, but hopefully its success will prompt more nun movies and more actresses will seek nun roles. Doubt may yet have a very strong impact on the future of the genre.

The movie is scheduled for an April 7 DVD release. It's available for pre order now from our sponsor CD Universe

Severin has announced plans to release Joe D'Amato's L'Alcova (AKA: The Alcove) on DVD.

Featuring the sizzling combination of Laura Gemser (Sister Emanuelle) and Lili Carati, the movie itself isn't quite a nunsploitation film. What catches our attention is the amateur porn flick being filmed within the movie, "The Mysteries of the Inquisition.

Byron once recounted the story of how Michael Powell telegrammed to inform her she had landed the part of Sister Ruth. "The trouble is," he wrote, "you'll never have such a good one again."
