Sister Anna Nobili: From lap dancer to nun
April 4, 2009
ROME -- The headlines read "'Lap dancing nun' to perform for cardinals and bishops", but it was so close to April Fools day that we were certain that this was a joke. However, it's no joke! 38-year-old Sister Anna Nobili is a real nun in the order of the Worker Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. She spent 20 years of her life as a lap dancer until her life was changed by an inspirational experience whle visiting the shrine of St. Frances of Assisi in Italy.
"I was throwing away my life dancing for men, I was throwing away my life in clubs," said Nobili. "There was sex without love and there was drugs. I was being used as a drug by people who wanted to see me dance. But now my life has changed. I have been reborn. I still dance. I have never given up dancing, but now I dance for God."
Nobili is scheduled to dance in front of senior Church officials this week at the Holy Cross in Jerusalem Basilica in Rome, in a performance called "the Bibe: Day and Night".
The performance is base don stories form the Bible. Nobili calls her choreography "Holy Dance".
"I really liked my old life — I was at the center of looks, but hen I realized was throwing my lfie, my body and my sexuality away," she said.
