Nuns picket Halfway House screeningNunsploitation.NetDecember 19, 2004 NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Movie goers attending the Fourth Annual Valley Film Festival screening of The Halfway House on Friday were greeted by a pair of nuns bearing picket signs. The signs read "Halfway House movie is unfair to nuns" and "Halfway House is nunsploitation!" However, the protest was just a publicity stunt, orchestrated by director Kenneth J. Hall and the nuns were actors Tawnya Johnson and Sarah Williams. "Since this followed right on the heels of our screening at the Hollywood Film Festival, I thought I'd liven things up a bit by doing a William Castle-style promotional gimmick," Hall told Nunsploitation.net. "An hour or so before the show, a pair of nuns carrying picket signs appeared out in front of the El Portal Theatre. The stunt set the tone for the evening and the audience had a blast." The Halfway House was among dozens of independent films and shorts showcased at the four-day festival.
