The Star Wars - Nunsploitation connection

The Star Wars mania is upon us once again, and who are we to ignore it?

Just because there aren't any nuns in the Star Wars saga doesn't mean there's no home for Lucas' vision of the future here. Hey, they've got Jedi Knights, we've got the Knights of Templar. There's got to be a way we can work this in...

Lo and behold there is! Former Star Wars actors Koo Stark, and more notably, star Carrie Fisher have both played nuns in their careers.

Stark was cast in the first 1977 Star Wars film as Luke Skywalker's friend, Camie. In a scene that was ultimately cut from the film, Stark's character condescendingly dismisses Luke when he claims there's a space battle going on high above Tatooine.

Stark later went on to play the title role in Chris Boger's film version of Marquis De Sade's Justine, released the same year as Star Wars. In Justine, Stark portrays one of two sisters who are cast out of the convent after they spurn the advances of a lustful Mother Superior. Justine goes on to live a life of virtue, but know nothing but torture, while her sister sells her self into prostitution and lives a life of luxury.

Star Wars' leading lady, Carrie Fisher who portrayed the spunky Princess Leia didn't don the habit for another 20-some years. She briefly plays the role of a nun in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

In a wildy contrived misunderstanding, Fisher's character unwittingly convinces Jay that she is demanding oral sex in exchange for picking up hitch hikers.

A scene in which Jay plucks the nun's pubic hair from between his teeth was cut from the film.

Fisher later commented on her role in an interview with James Van Der Beek, saying: " I play a nun, which was awful to do, because nuns are good people. Not that I'm not a good person, but generally I play characters that are a little bit edgy. But this time I had to play someone who was good and earnest ... It was complicated and I don't like memorizing dialogue, which is why I kind of got out of the business of it."

Who knows what the future will bring?

With three new movies and a number of young women actors, any number of them could don the habit for a try at a nunsploitative role. Perhaps we'll see Natalie Portman as the next sexy Star Wars actor to take to the veil.... One can hope!
