Inspired by Stendhal's Promenades dans Rome, Borowczyk gave Behind Convent Walls an almost whimsical look and feel. The movie is an outpouring of everything the director ever wanted to do in a film. Borowczyk manages to incorporate brimming passion and sensuality with his other passions, music and — oh yes! — nuns! The movie comes off as lighthearted whimsy, yet at the same time, sexually arousing and powerful.
