Images in a Convent
(1979) Beyond a shadow of a doubt, if you're looking for pure eroticism, exploitation, nudity and sexual excess, Joe D'Amato's Images in a Convent is the movie for you. While it's not as strongly story-oriented as say, Ken Russell's The Devils (actually, it's not story-oriented at all), this film embraces by design the most successful and exploitative elements that Russell's film showcases only as a matter of course. For Russell, the excess is a means to an end -- an instrument for telling the story of how politics and religion can be used to destroy a man (and, in turn, a city). For D'Amato, the exploitation is the end. This movie is pure sleaze, through and through. D'Amato makes no apologies for it, in fact he embraces it. That's what makes it #1 on our list. The Devils
(1971) This movie is ranked #2 only because the author of this list prefers to focus more on the sexual and exploitation elements of the genre. As a movie and overall experience, The Devils is far and away #1. Ken Russell tells a stirring and dramatic story of Father Urbain Grandier whose sexual excesses leave him open to a politcal scandal to accuse him of sorcery and remove him from power as the de facto governor of a fortified city. The heretical ravings of a scorned nun are used to stir the convent into a frenzy of sexual depravity all for the sake of defaming Grandier. Russell spares no expense in showcasing a horde of nuns in a hysterical, sexual frenzy. Though it was not his intent, the tremendous shock value of his film fathered an entire genre of nunsploitation movies.
School of the Holy Beast
In any country where you find nuns, you'll find nunsploitation films. Little did Catholic missionaries to Japan know that they would be sowing the seeds for one of the most perverse and, ironically, most beautiful nunsploitation movies ever! Norifumi Suzuki's School of the Holy Beast tells the tale of Maya who enters the convent to discover the truth about her parents. It turns out that the convent is not all that it seems and that the truth is more horrible and more perverse than Maya could ever have imagined. It is only fitting that her revenge is equally twisted. This is one of the most beautifully filmed movies of the genre. Suzuki contrasts order with anarchy, chastity with debauchery, black with white, good with evil, and beauty with defilement. Without a doubt, this is a must-have for any serious nunsploitation fan.
True Story of the Nun of Monza
Out of all the movies based on the Monza story, the award for the best (and most erotic) goes to Bruno Mattei's True Story of the Nun of Monza. A later 1986 version, Devils of Monza, gets an honorable mention. Both are very well made and focus less on historical accuracy and more on sex, nudity and scandal than earlier incarnations. Out of all the Monza films, Mattei's is definitely the sexiest, featuring the most beautiful women in the most depraved sex scenes. Although the story is based on history, Mattei never forgets that his purpose is to entertain and arouse his audience!
Sister Emanuelle
I may be odd in my high regard for Giuseppe Vari's Sister Emanuelle. It was one of the first nunsploitation films I'd ever seen, but I never get tired of watching it (or Laura Gemser, quite possibly one of the sexiest screen nuns ever!). To this day, it remains one of my favorites. An Emanuelle nun film sounds so wrong in so many ways, yet the filmmakers got this one perfectly right. They find a realistic way to get Emanuelle in the convent, keep her in character, make the film sexy as hell, and yet keep the character's integrity (and libido) in tact. The story is satisfying (as far as Emanuelle films go, anyway), the lesbianism is rampant, and Laura Gemser shows audiences yet again why she is one of the sexiest women in the world.
