Convent of the Sacred Beast

Review by Herolder

Mayumi joins the convent of St Clores, but not because she's overly religious, but because she wants to find out the circumstances of the death of her mother, who was a nun in this convent. And also because she wants to find out who her father is. The convent is a world of its own and with its own rules. Disobedience leads to punishment. When some money is stolen, the cardinal takes care of the thief in his own way. Later even an inquisitor is sent from Rome.

This Japanese nunsploitation movie is a masterpiece and as much an art film as it is an exploitation movie. While it has everything you expect from a movie of the genre like nudity, lesbianism, whipping and even rape, its cinematography is very artful, even poetic sometimes.

Director Norifumi Suzuki is probably best known for "Beautiful Girl Hunter" (1979), where he proved that even a nasty and pervert exploitation movie can be made in an artful and intelligent way.

"Convent of the Sacred Beast" is sometimes a bit over the top (but not cheesy), and therefore not that emotionaly involving. Especially the cardinal looks like the Japanese version of Rasputin. The women are all beautiful, though lead actress Yumi Takigawa sadly chose to do no more nude scenes after this movie.

This movie is simply a must see and definitely one of the best in the genre. A DVD of this movie is available in France as "Le Couvent de la bete sacree", though only in French and Japanese with French subtitles.
