The DevilsAKA: The Devils of Loudon, Los Demonios, Las diablas, Les Diables, Die Teufel, Der Teufel Von Loudun, Os Demonios(1971) Gallery of Images. Ken Russell's The Devils is the one film that can be credited for inspiring the bulk of movies that made up the nunsploitation craze of the 1970s. Filmmakers took the exploitative value of crazed, naked nuns running rampant and possessed throughout the convent and cashed in on it with many successors. Unlike Ken Russell, subsequent film makers often left out the strong story element, the social commentary and the political scandal. Just like the characters in the story, audiences were distracted by the madness and the shocking display of nudity, masturbation and wanton lust and failed to pay attention to the real story at hand -- the unjust execution of Grandier and the weakening of of the city Loudon by destroying its leaders and tearing down its city walls.

The DVD version of The Devils offered by HK Flix includes many scenes cut from the American VHS release by Warner Bros. (The Warner Bros. VHS is long out of print.) As scene in the thumbnails above, the most scandalous scenes were restored in the Spazmondo DVD. The final image depicting the scene in which Mother Jeane masturbates with Grandier's charred bone remains cut from the movie. The image is taken from Mark Kermode's "Hell on Earth" documentary, also available on the DVD from HK Flix. Return to The Devils main page
