Peter Mullan's rivetting prison expose, The Magdalene Sisters, is doubly shocking when you stop and realize that the events in the story are true. The Magdalene laundry houses operated through the 1990s, the last one closed its doors just a few years before the release of this movie.
To be fair, the events in Mullan's film may be based on true accounts, but they are exaggerated. While many of the anecdotes portrayed in the film did happen, they did not happen all at once in the same facility to the same three people, rather they are the most outrages accounts of many people over decades. Compressing them all into one film makes the conditions seem worse.
Though that may be little comfort. The fact that these facilities existed at all is shocking and outrageous enough.
