Synopsis: Denis Diderot, an 18th century Encyclopaedist, reportedly wrote La Religiuse as a practical joke on a friend in the form of a series of letters from a ficticious nun -- "Sister Suzanne Simonin" -- who claimed to have been forced into the convent at the age of 3.

The letters became the basis for the novel which, centuries later, was adapted into the movie.
