Post World War II Japan faced strict censorship in books and movies as obscenity, defined as any depiction of the genitals, is banned under the American-influenced constitution. Even today, depiction of the genitals remains forbidden and all pornography in Japan is censored (although film producers are constantly pushing the limits of how much censorship is required).
As a result, Japanese exploitation cinema in the '60s and '70s acted as a substitute for porn with directors making sex scenes as gratuitous as possible while falling just short of hardcore pornography. Often, it took creative camera work to avoid depicting the naughty bits and director Masaru Konouma was a master. As you can see below, creative layouts obstructing the bare minimum to avoid the censors is the only thing separating exploitation from pornography.
If Runa's Confession were an all-out porn film, it would be the greatest one ever. As it stands, it's hot and steamy exploitation that you'll never see on late night cable.
