Sacred FleshReviewed by Tim ShrumThis review appears courtesy of Next Tuesday MagazineUsed with permission Sacred Flesh is not a film that I would watch ordinarily. In fact it can be described as a nun sexploitation flick or nunsploitation if you choose. It is not a family genre flick. Despite itÕs strong sexual content, it is a superb mixture of great cinematography, weird Catholic history and thrills. Set in the backdrop of the late 18th century or early 19th century, the filmÕs premise involves Sister Mary who has been assigned to investigate into a spreading sickness of the mind amongst the nuns in her convent. It is during this that she reads the confessions of fellow nuns who have committed acts of sinful perversity or self torture. It is later in the film that you discover such acts include taking up with lepers, nuns cutting off their noses and lower lips, or having sexual relations with each other all to either rid of their desires or to satiate them. A priest and his sidekick are dispatched to the convent to look into the matter of the spreading sickness in hopes to put a stop to it. The Priest and sidekick later become nothing more but a ingenious tactic to reveal the so-called ÒplagueÓ that is spreading amongst the convents and to get into a bit of religious debate. Overall the acting can be a bit theatrical at moments while the cinematography and style is brilliantly amazing. The look of the film resembles at times a Hammer-esque flick. Sacred Flesh is just is not my bag, but for those who enjoy such films will not be disappointed for it has a plentiful amount of naked writhing lesbian nuns who are not afraid of sex. I can only recommend this film to those who are into the whole nunsploitation genre and are not afraid of strong sexual content nor how the Catholic religion is looked upon.
