![]() Detail The Silencer(1992)
A Nunsploitation.Net reviewSilencer is a little-known film that consistently receives low ratings in the range of one to two stars. However, critics fail to take the movie for what it is — cheap exploitation. When taken in the context of an exploitation film, Silencer takes on a new life. It never tries to go beyond exploitation for exploitation's sake. It stays well within its own bounds.Lynette Walden stars as Angel, an assassin for hire. Angel quit the killing business, but now she's back. She takes the role of an Angel of Retribution, killing the worst lot of criminals — child pornographers and human traffickers. Her character is similar to Chow Yun Fat's character in John Woo's The Killer — a criminal and a killer, but with a conscience and a code of honor. It's not just about killing for Angel. After each job, she needs to vent her passion. "First the kill, then the thrill." She picks up any handsome young stranger who crosses her path and gives him the night of his life. But all is not well. Angel is haunted by a ghost from her past. A mysterious voyeur known only as "George" (Chris Mulkey) watches her every move. As Angel kills criminals, George kills her lovers. Now Angel is afraid for the life of her newest boy toy &mdash "Tony" — a nice Italian boy who loves to cook. As an exploitation film, I thought Silencer delivered the goods. The story was loosely thrown together with glaring plot holes and unaswered questions. Who is George and what's his relationship with Angel? This question is never answered. Police question Angel and a punk named Drew she catches jacking her bike, but swallows her lies without checking their ID. What if the cops need to question them later? Why doesn't the cop notice that Angel and Drew don't even know each other's names? The assassinations make no sense. Who would actually pay money to have child pornographers assassinated? In one case, Angel is supposed to make the killing look like an accident, but both she and George leave obvious evidence behind. Angel receives her missions through a video game in a downtown bar, yet no one seems to notice. George himself uses a similar video game that has the godlike ability to watch every move Angel makes. At first, I thought George was a supernatural being, like the Angel of Death, and the video game was just a metaphor, but we soon learn that George is a real person with real flaws. In the end, if you care about the details of the stupid plot and the contrived assassinations, you're watching the wrong movie. This movie is all about watching Lynette Walden rip off her shirt and release her beautiful puppies. Walden is magnificent in this film. Her acting is passable and her body is fantastic. After the first killing, she takes the unsuspecting Drew back to her apartment for a little bath. "I think it's time to clean up your act," she tells him. She strips in front of him as he watches eagerly. She peels off her panties and then climbs in the tub with him for a long love scene. After Drew bites the dust, she seduces Tony, the owner of the bar and restaurant that houses her assassination video game. Angel throws herself at Tony and tears off his clothes in the kitchen. She furiously pounds on a condom vending machine with no luck. Finally, the scene ends when she tells Tony, "No glove, no love." However, they soon make their way to Tony's apartment for some disappointing off-camera action. In the final scene, Angel disguises herself as a nun. Her target is doing some acting in a movie in which he plays a priest. Sister Angel loads her gun with real bullets and kills the padre when everyone thinks she's shooting blanks. Silencer's gratuitous use of the gorgeous Lynette Walden makes it a passable exploitation film. As far as nunsploitation, there is only the brief assassinations scene at the end. There is no hanky panky or striptease in the nun outfit, which is disappointing. The movie has its highlights. In one funny scene, Angel buys a skimpy outfit to seduce her next victim with, but she spends hours in front of the mirror trying to figure out where she can hide her gun! While not an amazing movie, Silencer isn't bad for an afternoon's entertainment. Lynette Walden is gorgeous and the seduction scenes are hot. If you can catch it on cable, or if you come across the DVD for cheap, pick it up and enjoy it! Back to The Silencer database entry
